Is "Riki-zai" real or fake?

Dec 30 2019

This time, I will write about the problem about "Riki-zai".
In my last blog, I wrote that Riki-zai, a blade steel forged with a machine, has a consistent material quality and is inexpensive.
However, in Japan, few blacksmiths say they use "Riki-zai" as their material. That's because customers want materials that are forged by craftsmen.
There is no problem if the blacksmith actually forges steel by himself, but I feel a problem in selling a knife made of a material obtained by hitting "Riki-zai" with a hammer several times as a hand-made forged knife.
But in fact, "Riki-zai" is needed for old blacksmiths and small blacksmiths who have no successors to make a living.
In the future, as the number of blacksmiths with traditional Japanese knife-making techniques decreases, “Riki-zai” will become a major material.
